History
As the only center for independent living in New Hampshire, Granite State Independent Living (GSIL) is a leader, both across the state and regionally, in providing tools and resources for living life on YOUR terms. We are dedicated to the removal of physical, attitudinal, and social barriers to independence for people with disabilities. Our mission is fulfilled largely through providing advocacy to ensure full participation in society, peer support by connecting people with disabilities with each other, information and referrals on independent living issues, and skills training to teach everyday skills that allow you to live life on your own terms. These services are delivered through an extensive menu of services and programs.
Since its founding around a kitchen table in 1980 by a group of people who wanted to regain control of their lives after experiencing injuries that limited their mobility and independence, Granite State Independent Living has been providing independent living services to people with disabilities throughout the entire state. Starting with a budget of $40,000 and a staff of four in a condemned nursing home, Granite State Independent Living is now a respected statewide organization, managing a staff of 80 and a budget of over $9 million.
While much has changed over the years, one thing has stayed the same: Granite State Independent Living is committed to the principle of consumer choice, believing that YOU belong in the driver’s seat, and are the best person to make the decisions that affect your life.
