GSIL Partners With MANSD

June 28, 2010

Granite State Independent Living (GSIL) and the Manchester School District have been awarded $5,500 from the Walker Fund, NH Charitable Foundation,  to support a partnership initiative that will provide a meaningful summer experience for youth with disabilities who have dropped out of school or are at risk of dropping out. The window of opportunity is small for many of these students and the summer months can be used for re-engagement, skill building and work related experiences.

“GSIL is committed to the ideal that every student has value and deserves every opportunity to succeed. The desire of this project is to make a difference by giving these students the extra support they need to help them succeed in high school and find meaningful employment,” said Clyde E. Terry, CEO, GSIL.

Successful participation in this program will allow students to gain academic credit(s) through Extended Learning Opportunities (ELOs), and gain extensive career building exposures. The program will assist students in creating a new awareness of themselves and their potential, open their thinking to possible opportunities, and prepare them for the adult world they are about to enter.

"We welcome GSIL as a partner in extending the school year into summer opportunities to improve literacy, numeracy, and college readiness for Manchester students. We appreciate the support of Walker Fund and NH Charitable Foundation for this Manchester School District - GSIL initiative," said Karen Burkush, Assistant Superintendent of Manchester Schools.
